Road to Hana Tips, Tricks and Stops

The road to Hana is an unforgettable day no matter how you do it; whether it’s with your family, your friends, or your new spouse, this road is a non-stop adventure for all of its 620 curves and 52 one-lane bridges. If you keep reading after this you will see some of my favorite spots I have lived here almost 5 years now and I have done the iconic road to Hana 60+ times, so take my advice and you will not be disappointed. Time is money when it comes to driving the road to Hana, so be sure to leave early. If you are on West Maui I recommend starting your journey at 6:30 AM.

What to Bring on the Road to Hana

  1. Full change of clothes and bring a swimsuit, a towel, and possibly a light rain jacket.
  2. Closed-toe shoes.
  3. Beach chairs if you have room in your vehicle.
  4. Cash.
  5. A good playlist that has been downloaded; there is spotty service along the road to Hana.

Let’s start with the basics: rent a jeep and rip the doors and roof off; it’s my favorite way to do the road to Hana. it’s best to do during the summer months, but hey sometimes you gotta risk it for the biscuit! Make sure you’ve got a full tank of gas; getting gas in Hana is not something you wanna deal with. If you see a lifted Tacoma truck riding up on you pull over let them pass, they probably know the road to Hana much better than you and are trying to get home!

My Favorite Stops on the Road to Hana

Stop #1: Kuau Store for breakfast coffee and a sausage croissant is the play here just past Paia town on the left side it has a wall of surfboards to identify easily.

Stop#2: Rainbow eucalyptus trees 6.5 on the left

Stop #3: Mile marker 10 there is a rope swing into a waterfall that is a rush!

Stop #4: Wailau Lookout great spot for some pics just past mile marker 19 on the right east to miss.

Stop #5: Three bears waterfall on the right mile marker 19.

Stop #6: Hana Farms right after mile marker 31, grab the chocolate chip banana bread. They have a good vegan option as well, and it’s one of the few spots with Wifi on the road to Hana.

Stop #7: Hana Lava Tube mile marker 31 on the left side cash only.

Stop #8: Mile marker 32 Black Sand Beach spend 30 minutes here max also a cool cave on the right to check out.

Stop #9: Lunch Bruddah Hutts BBQ and Huli Huli Chicken and Poke Bobs is all you need to know and eat it at, the final stop Hamoa Beach where you should spend the remainder of the day my rule of thumb is to leave Hana town by 4 pm because once it gets dark the road to Hana becomes more challenging at night.
