Are Maui Meadows Smart Meters Considered Safe?

Yes, “Maui Meadows smart meters are safe.” I’m quoting the Maui News from an article dated 4/29/14. I’m pleased at the results as I am a participant in the Smart Meter project. I had one installed over 2 years ago and I still haven’t grown a 3rd arm, back hump, or an extra toe.

Let’s Look at the Facts

The results are as follows:

A smart meter measured from 10 feet away emits about 0.2 microwatts per square centimeter and when measured from 3 feet away emits 2 microwaves per square centimeter. (A Wi-Fi router measured from 3 feet away emits 1 microwatt per square centimeter and a microwave oven 2 feet away emits 200 microwatts per square centimeter. A cellphone at your ear emits more than 5,000 microwatts per square centimeter.) The test also included one access pole where it serves as a communication hub to the smart meters in the field. That number was well below state and federal limits.

Yes, there are two sides to every story and there are risks that we inherently take on as human beings. The opposition say that these uncontrolled radio bursts not only affect the participants but unwilling neighbors as well. All I can say is what I said before, there are risks that we take on as humans. Done!

Benefits

Let’s talk about some of the benefits:

1. The ability to monitor energy usage and change your usage patterns.
2. Additional hardware can be installed to help MECO shut down to monitor over usage.
3. By establishing more wise energy usage patterns, we are ultimately reducing our dependency on fossil fuels.

In closing, I’d like to quote a statement from Maui County Energy Commissioner Doug McLeod…”This testing is real data from real homes on Maui. It shows that the level of measured electromagnetic radiation were orders of magnitude lower than what the government calls out as dangerous.”

Ken,

Thanks for discussing and sharing the “facts” about this issue. I was recently visited at our Maui Meadows home by an advocate against the use of smart meters. Their hype and fear of what they perceive as detrimental effects are not based facts.

@Scott – thanks for reading. yes, did they try to leave a dvd with you? I politely asked him to leave. Do you have one? I like looking at my usage stats.

Yes, they did leave me a DVD but I ended up throwing it away so I don’t have it anymore.
