Date Night with Lili’uokalani: A Maui House with a Story

Whenever I behold archival images of the way Maui used to look I get lost in a dreamworld. The photo below shows one of the Kahului Railroad Company’s Buildings.

Vintage Maui Property with Classic Charm

One of the great thrills of selling Maui Real Estate is coming across historic vintage properties whose architecture and folklore give us a glimpse into a Maui that existed and thrived well before the advent of the interwebs, kite-surfing, duck face, and flash mobs. Such is the case with 146 Kono Place (MLS# 360350).

This parlor may have been part of the restaurant or cafe at the Kahului Railroad Company

A clever architectural mash up of relocated elements from the Old Kahului Railroad Company buildings, this house has all the endearing and enduring charm of classic vintage plantation architecture, with an extensive modernization carried out in 2007 making the house livable, lovable, luscious.

With differing ceiling heights, and a modern layout, the house offers elegant voluminous public spaces, and well separated cozy private spaces as well as several different outdoor areas, porches, lanais. There’s always somewhere to explore.

Why the Lili’uokalani reference? Well, folklore holds that the parlor (pictured in the above photo) may have been part of the restaurant or cafe at the Kahului Railroad Company, and if that’s the case, Hawaiian Royalty may have dined there.
