Hāna: A Slice of Heaven

Whoever coined the phrase “paradise on Earth” may have had Hāna in mind.

Often referred to as “Heavenly Hāna,” the remote East Maui community is one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. With a population of a little more than 1,200 and no traffic lights or 24-hour supermarkets, Hāna seems a world away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Instead of freeways, shopping malls, and high-rises, there are cascading waterfalls, lush tropical greenery, cooling ocean breezes, and pristine white, black, and red sand beaches.

Considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers, Hāna is where old Hawai‘i lives on. Even so, local residents have access to all of the accoutrements of the modern age. Maui’s commercial hub is a scenic, approximately an hour and 45 minute drive away (along the serpentine Hāna Highway, colloquially known as the Road to Hāna) and Hana Airport offers daily commuter flights to Kahului Airport.

Here, there’s a mix of on- and off-grid homes. Frequent passing showers allow for rainwater harvesting, ample sunshine generates solar energy year-round, and the climate is so mild that neither central heating nor air conditioning is needed. And while it may be one the most isolated communities in the state, contemporary utilities—including cable television and reliably fast Internet—are available.

Hāna Town is home to a gas station, post office, bank branch, and two small grocery stores, Hāna Ranch Store and the historic Hasegawa General Store (the oldest family-run business on Maui), which carries everything from homemade banana bread to fishing gear. On Fridays, residents can stock up on locally grown produce at the Hāna Farmers Market; Hana Ranch ground beef is available on the last Friday of the month. There are also a number of farm stands and eateries, including Ka‘uiki Restaurant at the Hana-Maui Resort (formerly Travaasa Hana), Hāna Farms Restaurant, Braddah Hutts BBQ Grill, and Thai Food by Pranee, deemed by many as one of Maui’s culinary hidden gems.

And there are plenty of points of interest. Among them: Hāna Cultural Center & Museum, Kahanu Garden, Hāna Bay Beach Park, Wai‘ānapanapa State Park, the Pools of ‘Ohe‘o (better known as the Seven Sacred Pools), and Hāmoa Beach, which author James A. Michener once called the most beautiful beach in the South Pacific (and for good reason).

With its beauty, tranquility, rich cultural heritage, and small-town charm, it’s no wonder so many celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Kris Kristofferson, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and the late George Harrison, have called this place home over the years.
