How to Buy Real Estate on the Big Island of Hawaii

Discovering clients’ goals is the foundation for finding the perfect Big Island property.

Year-round sunsets from the lanai are a “must have” for this buyer! (MLS# 230118)

I am so excited and energized!! Why?? I just assisted a few Big Island property buyers in finding and buying their perfect slice of paradise! The work I put into analysis and research has me invested in their dreams and goes far beyond showing customers what’s on the market (just about any ol’ agent can do that, and I’m not “any ol’ agent!)

When I first meet a client, they don’t always know what they want in terms of buying Big Island property. Why do they want to buy in Hawaii? Until we start the steps of discovery, we don’t know what properties fit their vision.

First, we need to find out if Hawaii is really the right place for them. It comes down to some basics: lifestyle, views, taxes, price, amenities. Does the area or neighborhood have outdoor activities and other lifestyle choices that match what the buyer is seeking? If they must have a Trader Joe’s, this island is probably not the right place for them to buy. The Big Island doesn’t have everything for everyone. We have to talk about their needs to see if the Big Island makes sense for them, and these are topics that don’t typically surface in a quick email or text message.

It’s my responsibility to discover all my buying clients’ criteria: price, design, neighborhood, size, etc. I send them our Hawaii Buyers Guide to help them in the process (Contact me if you’d like me to send you a copy!) and I provide sources for relocation companies, pet quarantine, and all the things that need to come together to move to Hawaii—it’s not as simple in most cases as moving from state to state on the mainland. I help clients make informed decisions so they’ll feel confident they made the right choice.

In the process, I do a lot more than show them houses.

When all these pieces come together, the anticipation and excitement come from knowing we’ve done all our homework, and have found the right property. This is it! This is the right thing. This is what we’ve been working for, and ultimately, what makes me passionate about my job! I’m excited and energized—can you tell?

Hello Annie,

We are wanting to purchase in hawaii as we have been there 9 times. What we want we’re not sure. My husband and I are 52 so have a little time before retirement but want to find a good deal with an investment…maybe VRBO?

Thank you for your time.
