2020 Realtors Conference & Expo: NAR & AARP are Teaming Up

NAR Meets AARP

“Understanding and better assisting older Americans in their real estate transactions has been a priority of NAR for some time, and partnering with AARP is a continuation of that focus,” said Bob Goldberg, CEO of the nation’s largest trade association. “Highlighting AARP’s Livability Index to Realtors® through the REALTORS Property Resource® will provide valuable insight to our members while positioning them to better safeguard and advise home and property buyers.”

As an SRES (Seniors Real Estate Specialist), I was thrilled to hear the news of NAR (National Association of Realtors) and AARP teaming up to educate all on choosing how to live as they age.

Realtors Property Research & AARP’s Livability Index

RPR will now have access to AARP’s livability index — desires of senior property owners. This livability index is based on:

  • Housing
  • Neighborhood
  • Transportation
  • Environment
  • Health
  • Engagement
  • Opportunity

With these resources, the hope is to create a better understanding of Senior housing needs over their lifetime.

Understanding Seniors

Change is happening. My grandparents did not consider retiring, selling their family home, then purchasing a new home to “age in place.” It didn’t make sense for them to do so. But, now we’re seeing people living 20 to 30+ years into their retirement. It’s decades of a whole new lifestyle that needs to be considered.

We recently helped Senior clients sell their family home they’ve owned for 20+ years. They are retired, senior clients who have decided to move to the mainland to be closer to their family and live in their new “forever” home.

Did You Know?

AARP studies show that millennials and seniors share many similarities in the needs and wants of buying/selling a home.

Both millennials and seniors desire:

  • Using an experienced professional in helping them through the process of selling/buying property
  • Being close to family/friends
  • Newer/better quality homes & communities
  • Live, work, and play in close proximity

It’s my duty and obligation to reduce challenges that the older generation may face in finding neighborhoods that fit their lifestyle. Empowering others to choose how they live as they age is my goal.
