Why We Sing “Hawaii Aloha”

It’s the time of the year that we all love so much, one which we have 3 holidays in a month, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. In Hawaii, it is such a time where we enjoy not only caroling but partying as well. One of the things we have loved for generations is our parting song where all the people at the celebration gather, hold hands, and rock back and forth singing “Hawaii Aloha.” It’s an event that has been a special part of islanders’ lives and seems to unify our love for the islands, our friends and family. This special something of singing a song or at least the few words we know and even though we don’t know the Hawaiian words or even the meaning we feel the love of the islands. I play in a Hawaiian music trio. We close every gig with this song, and I thought in this season of giving thanks for all we have and that we get to live in Hawaii that this song is brought to the agents and their guests at our annual Christmas party. The agents and guests are gathered together, and we never know how many people will arrive at the celebration, and we don’t care; it’s Hawaii, and that is how we live. Sharing our home, our lives, our varied foods, and being inclusive of all races, cultures, and customs, we leave our differences at the door.

Here are the words that have touched generations in Hawaii and help make and keep our Hawaii a special place to live and love. Ladies and gentlemen allow me the pleasure of introducing you to HAWAII ALOHA if you are unfamiliar with it. Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the background story Rob. We sing Hawaii Aloha as the last song of our weekly ukulele jam club in North Kohala. Still gets me every time.
