Waterfront Living In Beautiful Hawaii Kai, Oahu

Shortly after joining the East Oahu office of Hawaii Life, I was blessed to receive an invitation from a fellow real estate agent, to join him and one of our brokers for an afternoon surf session. Instructions were simple: Show up at his residence on Spinnaker Isle at the appointed time with board and favorite beverage. And what a treat it was to walk out to his backyard, and hop on his Boston Whaler. Forget all about paddling out to the break; within minutes we were being dropped off right by the line. I could get used to this. Marina front living on O’ahu. . . I was hooked.

The marina is the centerpiece and the result of one man’s vision — Mr. Henry Kaiser. A tremendously successful businessman, Mr. Kaiser learned of this area in the 1950s when it primarily consisted of a fishpond, largely surrounded by undeveloped lands. Eventually he formulated a plan to develop the entire area into a residential community and began construction in the early 1960s. Incredibly he self-financed a vast majority of the development.

Hawaii Kai has flourished over the years and is considered to be one of the most desirable places to live on O’ahu. And if you enjoy water sports, or simply enjoy waterfront living, I highly suggest you consider living on the marina. There is no other area on the island where you can have your boat privately moored on a dock just steps from your door. And depending on your preference, you can choose from a condominium, townhome, or single family residence.

Price of Properties

In the past year, most marina front condos and townhomes have sold between $600,000 and $1MM. Here is a nice 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath townhome currently on the market at Kaimala Marina for $785,000. For single family marina front homes, it is difficult to find anything priced below $1.2MM. Most sell between $1.4MM and the low $ 2MM’s. Here is a well maintained home currently on the market for $1.825MM.

Mind the Wind

It is important to note that the wind can be very gusty at times in Hawaii Kai. Depending on your preference for wind conditions, the location of a home, and the direction it is facing may diminish or increase your pleasure of living on the marina.
