Big Island

Want to Know What's Happening In The Big Island's Waimea (Kamuela) This Labor Day Weekend?

Would you like to know what’s happening in the Big Island’s town of Waimea (Kamuela) this Labor Day holiday weekend? Or really any weekend? It’s simple, just take a drive to the town bulletin board at the stoplight when you come into town by the post office.

This part of town acts as the town bulletin board—just make sure you don’t read when you drive

The Waimea custom is for the leader of local events to order up a banner and then post this banner on the corner in front of the old sheriff’s office. Now, you should feel as if you’re really in Waimea, cuz I just gave you directions based on what used to be there, not what’s there now! If you live here, you’ll see that’s a common way of giving directions.

So, what is happening this weekend? It’s Waimea, so what better way to celebrate a holiday weekend than with a RODEO? The fun begins at noon on Saturday, September 3rd with rodeo events that include open and dally team roping and double mugging, and po’o wai u, saddle bronc, bull riding, and wahine barrel racing.

Always fun to watch, is the century team roping competition—one team member must be over 50 and their combined ages must be over 100—and you’ll really want to see Mutton Busting—keiki sheep riding. Great fun for the whole family to watch!

On Sunday is a very special event—a live auction for saddle horses and 2 year-old quarter horses. The rodeo will be back again at noon with more events. There will be plenty of food both days.

That’s the fun for this weekend. Want to know what’s happening next weekend? Take a drive into town and have a look for yourself!

I love the Big Island! Aloha.

Pat, can you run by this afternoon and preview the horses? The on line brochure only shows 5 being auctioned, far fewer than i remember from previous years and I’m looking for a well-broke horse!
