Waikii Ranch – Big Islandʻs Only True Equestrian Community

I have written many times about horse property for sale on Hawaii Island (and sometimes beyond the Big Island). I have received several phone calls from those posts during the past couple of weeks from horse owners currently stuck at home but still planning their eventual move to Hawaiʻi — maybe sooner than they previously thought.

One thing that bears repeating is that unlike most places on the Mainland, we have very few options for actually riding horses off your own property. The only equestrian-oriented gated community with both facilities and a significant trail system for riding on the Big Island is Waikii Ranch, outside of Waimea (Kamuela).

What Can I Do With My Horse at Waikii Ranch?

I have not counted lately but off the top of my head I would guess that around a third of the residents at Waikii Ranch own horses or other livestock. There are also people who live outside of the Ranch but buy a lot in order to keep their horses there, ride the trails, and use the facilities.

There is no community barn as there is at at Puu Lani Ranch near Kailua Kona. Like Puakea Bay Ranch and Kohala Ranch, equestrian easements ring the community so residents can ride on common area within the Ranch. However, at Waikii Ranch not only are these common easements much more extensive, but the back portion of each lot is actually a grazing/riding easement, and the border of all the interior roads is available to equestrians, so you have direct access no matter which lot you buy.

Just behind the community offices and clubhouse are a polo field, two arenas, and a round pen. There are several trainers who give lessons to Waikii Ranch residents, with expertise disciplines ranging from barrel racing to eventing.

How Much Does Waikii Ranch Property Cost?

Long time horse-owning clients just took the plunge on a Waikii Ranch lot for their future retirement home, but they left a few good options if you are interested. There are three 10-acre parcels currently listed from $320,000 to $397,000.

My favorite among the currently listed Waikii Ranch vacant lots has a big ocean view (MLS 632568)

The only Waikii Ranch home on the market currently is a true equestrian estate on 53 acres listed for $5,695,000. If thatʻs more than you need but prefer a home you can move into today, let me know your needs, and Iʻll be in touch with new listings as they arise.

Hi there,
I was wondering if you might have any horse property or Homes with affordable near by boarding? I would love to stay below 320,000 but I’m not sure that is something that may be feasible.
Thank you!

> Hi Melissa, I will email you directly, but at that price point you probably would need to look with someone from our Hilo office on that side of the island. The County offers boarding at Panaʻewa and that is your most affordable option.
