Update: Newlyweds Search for Oahu Home

Tonight on HGTV, my latest episode of Hawaii Life titled Oahu newlyweds search for a bigger home where they can start their family will air again.

Dan & Keala in Hawaii Kai

Dan and Keala discussing their initial home wants in Hawaii Kai

What I loved about this episode was the broad variety of inventory we saw during their home search. We covered marina front town homes in Hawaii Kai, traditional homes near downtown Honolulu and newer construction homes in Ewa Beach.

Here I am being interviewed about the pros and cons of each property

Since the episode was shot this past summer, there’s been a lot that has transpired. All of the properties have since sold. Here’s a breakdown of what happened and also what’s available in those neighborhoods:

Punchbowl

Punchbowl Home

Punchbowl home sold for $700,000

The home in Punchbowl was on the market for roughly 3 months. It started at $738,888, was reduced to $719,888 and ultimately sold for $700,000. What was attractive about the home (outside of the location relative to Downtown) was its charming architecture. It reminded Dan and Keala a lot of the home they were living in at the time.

Cozy 2 Bed Home

Single Wall Construction Home Kapahulu Plantation Style Home

The Punchbowl home offered them lots of more space, however when living near the heart of Honolulu, the prices are higher as well as the construction typically being older.

Kaimala Marina

Kaimala Marina

Kaimala Marina unit sold for $680,000

Asking $678,000, the Kaimala Marina unit sold over asking in just 3 weeks on the market. This was close to Keala’s work in Hawaii Kai and the marina lifestyle is really hard to beat. The good news is there’s another one on the market for $100k less. The catch is this particular one is not on the water. You could still have access to a boat dock though by living here.

Kaimala Marina non marina front

Kaimala Marina unit (MLS # 201419242) available for $560,000

Although Keala and Dan loved the location and marina lifestyle, the maintenance fees were a little challenging for them starting a new family.

Ka Makana at Hoakalei

Ka Makana Home in Hoakalei

Ka Makana home in Hoakalei sold for $670,000

The feedback I’ve gotten from most of my friends that have seen the episode felt like the Ka Makana house was the nicest home (by far). I’d have to agree with them. If you’re not commuting to Honolulu on a daily basis, your money goes so much further in Ewa Beach. The good news is that there is still a fair amount of homes similar to this available. Here’s a start for a newer home in Ewa Beach’s Hoakalei search.

Latest with Dan and Keala

Since wrapping up our filming, a lot has also changed in the lives of Dan and Keala. They started the permit process and are planning on breaking ground on their family’s property in January. In addition, they were blessed with great news and are expecting a baby daughter in February!
