If you’ve been anywhere near Waikiki lately, you’ll notice there’s something abnormal looking that stretches towards the sky out of the ocean. It can be seen as far away as the hilltops of Diamond Head. What is this Unidentified Floating Object?

This is actually part of the Waikiki’s sand replenishment project that our own Jeanne Bubloltz has been writing about. Why do you need to put sand on a beach, you might ask? Doesn’t Waikiki already have sandy beaches? Well, sure it does, however, after years and years of erosion, surf, and shifting coasts, the beach isn’t as big as it used to be.
In addition to all the tourism, sand, and surf, Waikiki is the largest condo market in Honolulu. There are thousands upon thousands of residents that choose to call Waikiki their home. In my opinion, Waikiki beach is actually THE nicest beach on Oahu and it’s no wonder all the hotels decided to stake their claim on oceanfront real estate there.
