When Chief Piilani the Great, the ruling Alii (Royal) of the Island, united the Island of Maui in the 1500s, he built connecting paths winding around the islands. These paths then became Honoapiilani Highway, connecting the Hono (bays) of Piilani. Streams would come down to each of these bays. You can still see rocks piled by the side of paths and roads in certain areas, for instance across the Pali. The six bays along the Lower Honoapi’ilani road from South to North are: Honokowai, Honokeana, Honokahua, Honolua, Honokohau, and Hononana; Chief Piilani’s favorite bays.
