The Power of Gratitude

We are in the throes of a major pandemic. It’s stressful. Scary. Unprecedented. None of us know when this will end or how we will end up. It’s hard to maintain a semblance of normalcy, let alone a positive attitude. But, we must. It’s important to our mental, emotional, and physical health to do so.  One way we can keep positive is to practice gratitude.

So, how do you practice gratitude? One way is to dole out thanks daily. Praise the people in your life. Give them kudos. Write a text, a letter, or simply say, “thanks.” Being specific about gratitude is important, too. Notice people doing good and acknowledge them. Let them know how much you appreciate who they are and what they do.

Keeping a journal — a gratitude journal — is another great way to maintain a thankful spirit. People who do are reportedly 25% happier than those who don’t. It’s great to reread journal entries and to reflect on all the reasons you have to give thanks.

Studies show that appreciating what you’ve got can help you survive, and even thrive, through tough times. More than ever, we need to have an attitude of gratitude. Granted, it’s hard to “feel” grateful right now. After all, we’re stuck in our homes because of COVID-19. Social distancing is hard. And, the economy is hurting. Life as we know it has changed drastically. At least for now.

Yes, our world feels upside down. But, being grateful is more than a “feeling.” It’s a conscious decision to acknowledge and to count your blessings. Truly, there are many reasons to be grateful. Think family. Health. Friends. Freedom. And that’s just for starters. Bottom line —people who are grateful and who acknowledge the goodness in life are generally healthier and happier.

COVID-19 and its effects will eventually end. In the meantime, we can allow the power of gratitude to keep us feeling positive, happy, alert, and very much alive!
