Lanai

The Island of Lana’i Stands Alone in Many Ways, Even During Covid-19

The Hawaiian Island of Lana’i, with its 3,000 residents, has held the Coronavirus to zero. No cases reported on the island at all. For those curious about what is there to do on Lana’i when you cannot go off-island, keep reading.

Hiking & Biking Trails

There are many hiking trails to uncrowded, remote areas. To name a few, Koloiki trail offers spectacular views of Molokai and Maui and Fisherman’s Trail coastal hike off Hulopoe Beach. The more well known Munro Trail winds through the Koele uplands and can be tackled by hiking, jeep, or bicycle.

For the dirt bike enthusiast, a trip to the Garden of The Gods is always a good day on Lana’i and is unexpected. My friend takes his electric bicycle across the top of the island on the Munro Trail for a good workout. The Four Seasons is now offering Guided electric bicycle rides from their new Adventure Center at Koele for a great family outing.

Off-Roading

Explore Lanai’s largely undeveloped 140 sq miles on your ATV. Many locals use their off-road vehicles to go deer hunting or just enjoy the terrain with friends or family. A little known fact is that Lana’i has approximately 15,000 axis deer living in the uplands. The Four Seasons offers guided UTV tours if you are visiting. Deer hunting can be coordinated through the DLNR on Lana’i.

Water Activities

Swimming, snorkeling, and paddle boarding at Hulopoe Beach is uncrowded and offers a unique walk up to Sweetheart Rock, which is a well-known sight for the island. Or, take a drive to the northeast side of Lana’i to unspoiled Shipwreck beach or south to Lopa for surfing.

Golfing

Lanai has one public course and one resort course. Cavendish is up in Koele and is free to the public (9-hole). Lanai Golf at Manele is an 18 hole Jack Nicklaus course that meanders along the coastline and is ranked in the top ten. Luxury property owners and Guests at the Four Seasons Resort are eligible to play the Manele course.

Even More Adventures

If that is not enough to entice you to the island, Four Seasons has a new Adventure Center, which is definitely worth checking out. There is an array of activities like ziplines, ropes courses, guided bike tours, and more for the active family or friends.

Note: Condos and houses in Koele or Manele District are eligible for Island Club Membership, access to Four Seasons Resorts amenities, concierge services, and golf. Email Sherriwilliams@hawaiilife.com for more info.

Sherri has lived on the island of Lana’i for 17 years and welcomes inquiries.
