Talk Story #27 – Hawaii’s Territorial Past Can Still be Found in the 21st Century
Recently, I found a small booklet in a stored box of our family “memories.” I started smiling at the cover for it was titled, Here is Hawaii-All in Natural Color. Ahhh yes—Waikiki, Diamond Head, rugged tropical mountains with waterfalls, the blue ocean, beautiful balmy days, stretches of white sand beaches, surfers and outriggers canoes, the mellow sounds of the Island Music—Paradise!
According to the introduction, I was holding a copy of “the first Hawaiian brochure issued entirely in natural color.” Oh my, but then, it was published in 1951—60 years ago this year! Pictorially, the 43 photos inside said it all. Here was evidence of the ultimate ‘dream place’ called Hawaii. The world’s visitors came and many stayed, changing the future forever.
The old Dillingham Transportation Building is dwarfed by the modern high rises
Honolulu, the State of Hawaii’s capitol, is the small but mighty city bordering the very busy harbor and ports. With its blend of historic pre-territorial day buildings and its stately government offices with their lovely park like surroundings, there are the modern glass sided skyscrapers and high rise condominiums.
Continued growth meant new sounds of construction and traffic; freeways were built as the new took over the old. The variety of world cultures and blend of races spread across Oahu, and over to the other islands, but underneath it all, our unique “Spirit of Aloha” remained.
So, what has this all got to do with Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers? Everything! An example of this opportunity to combine commercial and residential living in Honolulu would be a penthouse unit newly on the market (MLS# 1110174) at Harbor Court.
In Hawaii, there is a term called “Ohana”—meaning family—whether they be related or not and everyone at Hawaii Life is such an Ohana; a happy, positive, cohesive group of professional, enthusiastic and knowledgeable Realtors, each with their specialties in a particular island, location, or language, whatever you need. We all realize that it is a “lifestyle,” which is the predominant dream of living in Hawaii, not just on Oahu, but throughout each of the unique and diverse islands.
I am here to assist you when necessary, or refer a Realtor who will know of the location and properties in their areas of expertise. With prompt responses to your contacts, we all want to make the search a pleasant one and precise, allowing for time to relax and enjoy the process. With our 6 offices on 4 of the primary islands, a ‘Hawaii of the past’ can be found now, today.
Another beautiful day on the north shore, an empty clothes line, for the beach beckoned

Note: In Hawaii, there is often a gathering of family and friends, and in a casual way stories are told of that days happenings, or past events. We call it “Talk Story.” My continued series will be about different places around Oahu with a bit of their history, and the many opportunities for you today. I would love to hear about your personal Hawaii memories to share, perhaps during the territorial days, like I was, growing up out ‘Koko Head’ way. Hawaii is a special place and so are the people. Whether it is a new military move, a casual beach house, a downsized retirement home, a golf course fronted resort home-away-from-home, a grand residence with superb view, or a high rise condominium…the choices and the Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers resources are many.
