Sustainable Makena Estate, Living a Healthy Maui Lifestyle

Sustainable Makena Estate, Living a Healthy Maui Lifestyle

The first time I drove through the gate of 7155 Makena Rd, I felt like I was in old Hawaii, the deep green vegetation and mature canopy gives a refreshing welcome. The home, amenities, and surrounding landscape share a sense of calming simplicity; it provides space and clarity to shut off the surrounding world and rejuvenate. Designing the property around the existing topography and utilizing the natural elements were a significant consideration when developing the project.

Sustainable Lifestyle

The first step to running a sustainable operation is clean power. The property is equipped with 116 solar panels, which are on the original net metering agreement with Maui Electric.

Property Overview

Secondly, those panels feed charging ports for electric vehicles in the 836 sqft garage, and you can leave your oasis and keep your carbon footprint low.

A key component to minimizing energy consumption is smart design. The architect used natural light through large skylights spanning the entire living and kitchen and large windows and sliders throughout the property. The position of the large windows and sliders not only utilize light but they also collect the breeze, giving you a fresh supply of Maui trade winds.

Additionally, materials such as quartzite floors, granite counters, Italian plaster with a beeswax finish and clear cedar ceilings keep the home cool if you choose not to run the AC.

Edible plants are abundant throughout the property:

  • Mango trees (3)
  • Strawberry papayas (8)
  • Lime tree
  • Lemon tree
  • Orange tree
  • Tangerine tree
  • Apple banana
  • Star fruit
  • Allspice

Healthy Lifestyle

An especially impressive feature of this property is the separate living spaces. Each space has a specific function and position to keep you intertwined with the land. Your guests enjoy separate suites while you have your own sanctuary to clear your mind and nourish your body.

The master bedroom pod features an indoor/outdoor shower, home gym, laundry, and living room. Directly in front of the master bedroom is a 25-meter lap pool and jacuzzi. The home office is off the master bedroom, and it’s perfect for a productive getaway or a morning journaling session.

The main living area also has a large pool out front perfect for soaking up the sun or cooling off. Inside the main living, you have the kitchen, ideal for creating dishes using the fruit and plants from the property, the large dining area, living area and wine cellar (maybe the most important detail.)

If you and your guests want to stay on the property, you can spend hours honing your tennis skills on the court. Designed and built by John Monnier, the 11 layer court offers on court power and full lighting to keep you burning into the night as well as a viewing pavilion for spectators.

Off-site activities are just a stroll away as well. Directly out front are the crystal clear waters of Makena, some of the most pristine ocean habitat in the world. To the west are beaches such as Big Beach and Secret beach and to the East is La Perouse Bay and the La Perouse Marine Reserve (some of my favorite diving.)
