When the North swells start to lose their power as summer approaches, it’s the cue to get the boats serviced that have been on dry land for much of the surf season. For those of us living on the North Shore, the Na Pali coast – an immaculate stretch of weathered, green cliffs that drop 5,000 feet from the clouds to the ocean – becomes one of our favorite playgrounds.
By boat it becomes quick and easy to bolt down the coast and explore some of Kauai’s most beautiful beaches which are only accessible by sea. Kalalau, Honapu and Miloli’i are majestic spots, each a unique landscape in how they’re carved away from the cliffs. Day trips to hang on the expansive beach of Kalalau are the most memorable of Kauai summer days. When the conditions cooperate, we will pile the surfboards into the boat and search for empty breaks, or on the calmest of days, we will explore by snorkel the reefs of Miloli’i or numerous caves along the coastline. Other days, we keep our distance from the shore’s edge and let the beauty of the Na Pali set the most perfect scene for hauling in ahis, onos and mahi mahis.
While the Na Pali coast may be one of the most iconic images of Hawaii and the state’s extraordinary beauty, it serves as our backyard playground in the summertime Kauai life.
