Spotlight on Sandy Long – Big Island Broker With 30+ Years of Industry Experience

Sandy Long is celebrating 15 years of living on the Big Island in July. She has lived in Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island’s western coast, and in Ahualoa, on the Hamakua Coast. For her retirement years, she chose the beautifully green, rolling hills of Kamuela (also known as Waimea), where she hopes to help families experience the joys of homeownership.

The Big Island is huge and having lived in several parts of it, Sandy has built a client base all over the island who can attest to the professionalism of her services. While she loves to travel and experience different landscapes and cultures, she is happiest in the islands. “I love Hawai’i. It’s the only life I would want to live!” she says of her native home, where she grew up steeped in the spirit of aloha in her small, beachside hometown of Kailua, on the Windward side of O‘ahu,

Sandy works primarily from our Kohala Coast office, serving the needs of both buyers and sellers across the Big Island. She prides herself on her high standard of ethics and on the Golden Rule—treating every client and vendor the way she’d like to be treated.

Sandy has been a licensed real estate agent for 16 years, but she began her career in the industry 30 years ago working in escrow. Early in her career, she developed and implemented mobile escrow closings and served as a transaction coordinator for top-producing agents at Locations, working from their office on Waialae Avenue on O‘ahu.

Inspired to learn more, she studied for the Hawaii real estate license in a 7-day crash course and passed the state exam on the first try, due to her long experience closing escrow for other agents. She never looked back!

“If you see someone without a smile, give them yours” is one of Sandy’s mottos.

Sandy loves helping her clients through the process of purchasing or selling their home. “It’s an experience that’s a big part of their life journey,” Sandy says. “It is such a gratifying experience as they go through so many different emotions in the process. Just being there for them to listen and empathize as they go through their own unique experience. Every transaction is unique.”

Sandy eventually sold her home on O‘ahu and relocated to Hawai’i Island, where she worked with Maryl Construction—first in their new home construction division, and later, in their architectural division. Sandy also worked in sales offices of several new Big Island developments before managing the staff housing and other special projects at Parker Ranch.

“I am very proud of my employment accomplishments as they have enhanced my knowledge and built skills that pertain to different types of real estate sales,” says Sandy.

She later went to work for Gus Elliott, then the owner of a boutique brokerage on the Hamakua Coast that has since been acquired by Hawai‘i Life. “I joined Hawai‘i Life as they have a stellar reputation, great exposure, and resources for their agents,” says Sandy. “Hawai‘i Life is a unique group that really lives and embraces Hawai‘i’s culture and traditions.”

Her biggest career accomplishment has been passing Hawai‘i’s real estate broker’s exam. However, her biggest life accomplishment—and the one she’s most proud of—has been her role as a mom. Raising five children was no easy feat, especially while working full-time, keeping up her family’s home, and helping them stay active in sports.

She has closed four transactions and currently has a new active listing, and is on her way to reaching her “2020 Vision” to help local families get into a home of their own, and to help those drawn to the sunny Kohala Coast, the Hamakua Coast or Pahoa to find the perfect property to fit their needs. She says she wants nothing more than to assist her clients in acquiring a piece of the Hawai‘i life she enjoys so much.

In her downtime, you’ll find Sandy tuned into music from the ’60s and ’70s…classic crooners like Tony Bennet and Frank Sinatra. “I really appreciate all types of music as they are all different…for me, music soothes the soul,” says Sandy.

She spends her free time hanging out with family and friends. “Where I live, I am fortunate to be able to enjoy and take in the serene beauty of our unique landscapes throughout our island.”
