Resort Membership (Mauna Kea) = Golf, Beach, Pool + More

Imagine starting your morning with a cup of coffee and planning for the day. You have options with your resort membership such as: playing golf or tennis, swimming in the pool, lay in the sand on the beach, or even take an aerobics class. So many great choices!

As you already know, the Big Island has great weather year-round. One of the perks of owning property, living on the Island, or even visiting, is the ability to purchase an exclusive membership at the hotel/resorts. This enables you to enjoy the many benefits of the outdoor lifestyle that they cater to. Owning a resort property will give you access to these memberships.

Here on the Big Island, there are great options for resort memberships. Today, I’m going to talk about the Mauna Kea membership. I feel it’s an important topic because the benefits of membership give you exclusive access to golf, tennis, gym, spa, and classes. With the Mauna Kea’s membership, you are also granted access to one of our most iconic hotels on the island.

A Bit of History

The Mauna Kea Hotel was opened in 1965. At that time, there was only the Hilo airport and the Kona airport had yet to be built. To stay at the hotel, you would need to fly into the Hilo airport, then travel hours around the island. During the early years, the “room rates started at $43.00 a night!!” (Quoted from maunakeabeachhotel.com)

Access to the Beach

Mauna Kea has one of the most beautiful beaches on the island known as Kauna’oa Bay. They have limited public parking. Yet as a member of the hotel, you have full access to the beach, the lounge chairs, towels, and parking.

If you have ever been to Hapuna State Beach you know the beauty of a large white sand beach. Mauna Kea’s beach is similar to Hapuna’s beach yet it’s a bit smaller but more intimate. It is also better because the beach is a small cove, so the ocean comes in slowly and gently. The waves are not too large and super easy to walk into the ocean and relax.

There is also Hua Tree Restaurant which is right on the waterfront. You can enjoy a beachfront lunch while listening to the waves.

Exclusive Access to Two Hotels

By being a member of the Mauna Kea, you are allowed to use the facilities at the Mauna Kea Hotel and the Hapuna Hotel. Two hotels for the price of one!

Pool Pool Pool

Both hotels have beautiful pools that overlook the ocean. What a way to spend the day! With membership, you can choose which pool you’d like to spend the day at. With three pools to choose from!

Oceanfront Golf

Many people buy the membership because they want to play golf at this amazing course. The Mauna Kea Golf course was one of the first golf courses on the island and was created by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. They turned lava fields into a famous golf course known around the world which showcases the ocean and coastal views. You have two golf courses to choose from as well.

Seaside Tennis Club

With 11 courts to choose from, members utilize the tennis courts. There are daily clinics, round robins, tournaments, private and group lessons. A lot going on with these courts!

Hotel & Restaurant

As a member of Mauna Kea, you receive discounts at all six restaurants and on hotel rooms. My favorite restaurant is the Manta. With indoor and outdoor seating, you can enjoy the sunset while enjoying a great meal. From the outdoor dining area, you can see manta diver’s lights sparkling in the night sea. An experience to remember!

Resort Properties

The resorts are in what is considered the dessert area. The sun is almost always shining, it’s a perfect 74 degrees, and has the best beaches on the Island. This makes the area highly desirable.

I specialize in resort properties and would be honored to help you find your piece of paradise. You can learn more about me at my Instagram page or sign up for email updates where I share real estate stories.

My husband & I are considering move to your area. We wondered what the cost of joining Mauna Kea Tennis only membership would cost. Thank you, Jennie & Greg Deming
