Do-You-Remember… Waimea-Kohala Airport in the ’60s?

I remember when… Hawaiian Airlines flew passengers to and from Oahu with daily scheduled flights from this airport in Waimea from 1960 through the early 1970s. As a passenger myself and the importance of this service, everyone knew to ignore the turbulence when landing in Waimea—yikes!

Traveling from Waimea-Kohala Airport to Oahu in the ’60s was a big deal. Everyone dressed up in their best, women in dresses, men in Aloha shirts and slacks and yes everyone wore shoes… no slippers.

Living on an island and having air travel is vital to us. Back in the ’60s being able to fly out of Waimea-Kohala Airport on Hawaiian Airlines provided us with a great service that allowed businesses and families to stay connected.

Today:

Hawaiian Airlines flew the following aircraft into Waimea-Kohala (MUE) from the 1950s to 1981. Douglas DC-3, Douglas DC-6, Convair 340, Convair 640, McDonnell Douglas DC-9, Shorts 330. I flew to and from that airport many times in the 1970s on Hawaiian.

Royal Hawaiian Air service flew into this airport using Cessna 402 and Twin Otter aircraft.

For a short time in 1970, Aloha Airlines also flew into Waimea with a Vickers Viscount aircraft (4 engine turboprop).
