One More Thing To Do When Preparing For Hurricanes in Hawaii

Hurricanes are simply a part of life here in Hawaii. Thankfully, such storms have had very little impact on the state since 1992. As a long-time resident of the Big Island, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa always bring a sense of security to me knowing that, historically, the cool winds dissipate the hurricanes, converting them into tropical storms that bring much-needed rain to our island.

Every year, local media and the Civil Defense Service announce Hurricane Season in which Hawaii residences are encouraged to prepare. With Hurricane Iselle and Hurricane Julio heading our way, the entire island is taking precautionary measures.

Schools have closed to make room for emergency shelters, residents are stocking their shelves with provisions, and Civil Defense is advising everyone to be off of the roads by 3 P.M. and to stay home. Like a Snow Day in the Mid West, Hawaii is having a Hurricane Day.

Hawaii’s Civil Defense, National Weather Service, County, and State Agencies always impress me with the advancements they make with emergency preparedness. Their ability to keep the public informed makes me feel that Hawaii is an incredibly safe place to live. The technology and warning systems that are in place across the entire state are impressive!

Tip: Revisit Your Homeowner’s Insurance Policy

In addition to battening down the patio furniture and securing potential hazards on the exterior of your home, it is wise for everyone to revisit their homeowner’s insurance policy. Since standard homeowner policies do not cover hurricane and flood damage, it’s always good to familiarize yourself with the type of coverage you have, the deductible amount, and the claims process.

According to an article posted online by the National Weather Service, “Hawaii State Insurance Division is encouraging homeowners to prepare for a hurricane by taking an inventory of their belongings.” According to the article, policyholders can take pictures or use the free MyHome mobile app released by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Taking this simple step can help you save time in the event you need to file a claim and improve your chance of recovering what your policy covers.
