As a Buyer’s Agent here on the Kona Coast, I’m always on the lookout for homes with great ocean views. As you know, if you have been reading my blogs I’m also looking for homes with style. One that is popular amongst buyers is the Hawaiian plantation-style. It is quite common in the old sugar towns of Kohala and Hamakua, yet surprisingly rare here in Kona.
Plantation-style refers to a time early in the last century when sugar was king here in Hawaii. In the sugar towns, charming bungalows were built for the plantation managers. These homes featured polished wood plank floors, a touch of gingerbread detailing, bright white paint, and deep eves to keep out the tropical sun; a little bit Victorian, a little bit simple farmhouse, and a lot tropical.
Since Kona was never a sugar town, cattle, citrus, and coffee are Kona’s crops, Hawaii’s plantation-style didn’t have much of an impact here. There are a few here and there, but they rarely come onto the market. When they do, they fetch a pretty price…
Back in 2002, a couple who owned a local plant nursery gave up looking and built one. This 5 bedroom estate (MLS# 242073), priced at $1.2 million, is quintessential plantation-style with an incredible ocean view to boot. The estate is in a great location, just around the corner from Kona’s famous Aloha Theater and Cafe in Kainliu town on the border between North and South Kona. It is out in the country, but just minutes to town.
The home they built combines the style of the plantation era such as gracious lanais, double hung windows, and glossy white bead board with some luxuries from the current century like an up-to-date kitchen and media room. This is the kind of home that saves marriages by making everyone happy.
As you can imagine, since the builders owned a plant nursery, the grounds of the estate are an arboretum. Flowers, fruit trees, and even a large koi pond dot the landscape. The back lanai opens to a pool and the view of the Kona coastline and the Pacific. I can’t think of a better place to end a day sipping a Mai Tai and watching a famous Kona sunset.

You have one good eye, Erik. What a property! This Hawaiian plantation home style have been lovingly restored. I was aware of plantation style homes in North Kohala but not in Kona. You mentioned 5 bedrooms but how big is this lot?

Catherine, Yes it is kind of special. It is just under 2 acres at 1.79 acres all lushly landscaped.

Erik – I like this home a lot, too! You put just the right twist on the words to highlight it’s unique features. It’s also not far from Kona Joe’s – for the coffee lover!

Will the Seller L@@K for a Loan to assist ? and can the Seller carry-back for a short term up to 90% of the property to easy qualify the buyer as this still needs alot of WORK… Shrimp and Abalone, or Scallops Farming Still needs to be designed or a Talipia Farming , Lobster Farming or Sea-food that would work great with Tourism and have many Weddings and banquets a True Hawaiian “style”… I have a method where we would be asking for 60% of Project which is from the 1.2M$ price tag, which is ; seeking funds that would be ; US$01,920,000.00 and, or 40% of project as US$02,688,000.00 Using the Property and the projected income alone from the finished WORK , and a Grand Opening* … which the Loan = Amortized in thirty years due in 25 … would help keep the bills down so I can still learn Culture and Surfing , Woodworking, Instruments, and take care of the Botanicals or deal in Exotic Fruits and others to ship for Cash-Flow … I want to try Truffles … ( just think, ) Enchantment Island, and Chocolate or Vanilla Ice-Cream and Truffles ( mmm — mmmm !! ) but we have to turn the sleepy into the excited … how to do it would come by our putting our minds together … as there is really , money all over the WORLD that would love to Have, Hold and Hover this Property and many others like it !!
I believe in the POWER TO HEAL … so there would be distillery, and Essential Oils, or Herbals that would assert in Under a two year projection to make If construction money can be included in the transaction … ( I know I am sticking my head out = way out over a limb but it IS a beautiful Property and we do want to see it developed like the Hawaiian People have been promised … relaxed and with Style. thank you very much
