Mountain Views of Hanalei

Most come to Hanalei for the warm turquoise waters that flow in the in the crescent-shaped bay. But part of what makes this coastal plain so magical are the mountains that encircle it. Towering above the river valleys of Hanalei and stemming from a single ruggedly carved mountain ridge that traces back to Kauai’s center Waialeale, are three monumental mountain peaks. Usually dripping in cascading waterfalls and often covered in dreamy mist, these peaks are referred to as Hihimanu (left), Namolokama (middle), and Mamalahoa (right). Nestled in the center and standing the tallest, Namolokama peaks at a looming 4421 feet tall.

“According to legend, it is said that the first rainbow came to the Hawaiian Islands when the god Kane threw pieces of colored kapa barkcloth into a pool below Namolokama’s precipitous waterfall. This happened after Anuenue, the goddess of rainbows, hid on Kauai while calling to the god Kane through her dreams. As Kane traveled to the Waioli river mouth, he met several women falsely claiming to be Anuenue, each giving him a colored piece of kapa cloth. When Kane reached the pool at the base of Namolokama’s waterfall, he threw all the pieces in the water. There the kapa pieces joined together to form the first rainbow and it was then that Anuenue rose up from the water and presented herself to Kane.” *cited from hawaiianencyclodpedia.com
