Brief History of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel

The legendary Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is located on the sunny Kohala Coast, about 25 minutes from the Kona International Airport. In 1960, when Laurance Rockefeller flew over the undeveloped Kohala Coast, seeking a possible site to build a new Resort Hotel Destination, he chose the beautiful white sand crescent beach at Kauna’oa Bay – virtually in the middle of nowhere. There was no Queen Kaahumanu Highway back then, only a treacherous, bumpy, pot holed road from Waimea to Kawaihae.

Mr. Rockefeller was definitely ahead of his time, and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel he built and opened in 1965 was a trend setter. He knew the great beach also deserved a spectacular golf course and exceptional dining to accompany the most exclusive and expensive resort of its day.

Four decades later, following a $150 million repair and renovation, The Mauna Kea once again stands as a landmark of luxury on the Big Island’s golden Kohala Coast. I’ll always remember the first time I walked through the Hotel entry; there was no front door. A very unique and unusual feeling, open to the warm Hawaiian climate, overlooking that beautiful white sand beach.

Mauna Kea Beach Resort’s Awards and Recognitions

  • Named to Travel & Leisure magazines “World’s Best Awards” 2012 rankings
  • 2012 Best Resort Courses List (Ranked #31), Golf Week
  • Ranked No. 1 in Hawaii and seventh worldwide in the 2011 listings of “Top 100 Tennis Resorts” by Tennis Resorts Online
