Maui Weekend Events and Financial Resources for Local Small Businesses and Farms
Aloha friends! While we continue grieving for Lahaina, the rest of the island is trying to carry on as well as possible. Naturally, many of the events happening this weekend are focused on serving our community. The Queen Kaahumanu Center hosts two family friendly events this weekend. Friday’s concert is a special Kokua Edition including a candlelight benefit for Lahaina. Additionally, The MACC is hosting two family friendly starry night cinemas this weekend also to benefit the community. First, Friday will feature Trolls World Tour. Next, Saturday features Lyle Lyle Crocodile. And finally, Satrurday morning at the Kihei Library you can enjoy Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band.

The MACC’s Maui Wildfires Benefit Series
The MACC is putting on a series to support the community. The series will run through October 8, 2023. This weekend features not one but TWO Free Family Fun Starry Night Cinemas. Both events will serve as drop-off locations for the Maui Food Bank. First, Friday night, Trolls World Tour is playing. Then, Saturday night, Lyle Lyle Crocodile will play. Both shows starts at 7 pm and doors open at 5:30 pm. Food and beverage available from 5:30-9:00 pm both nights. Bring a low-back beach chair and/or a blanket and spread out on the A&B Amphitheater lawn.
Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band – Kihei Library
Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band will be delighting children and their parents at the Kihei Library this Saturday morning. Show begins at 9:30 am and runs until 10:30 am. Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band are a local family favorite. This is a free community event.
Family Friendly Events at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center
Kama’aina Nights
Queen Ka’ahumanu Center partners with Pacific Media Group with intention of perpetuating Hawaiian culture through live music and a celebration of ohana. This Friday features a special Kokua Edition. Services on hand include Maui Rapid Response, Women Helping Women, Ohana Keiki Exchange and Hawaiian Community Assets. The event takes place this Friday from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Kama‘ina Nights is a FREE quarterly music series featuring Hawaii’s local talent. This weekend’s features include Dillon Pakele, Kuikawa, Wehi Lei, Halau Ke’alakinano O Puna, Stephen Henderson, Shane Kahalehau, Maui Taiko and Halau o Ka Hanu Lehua.
Keiki Club
Queen Ka’ahumanu Center and Kumu Luana Kawa’a present Keiki Club at the QKC keiki play area. The focus is ‘olelo Hawaii (Hawaiian language). This is a great opportunity to learn along with your keiki. Enter to win giveaways and enjoy family friendly festivities this Saturday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.

Loans Available for Small Businesses Affected by the Maui Fires
SBA Loans
SBA Loans have been made available for homeowners, renters, nonprofits, and businesses of all sizes affected by the Hawaii wildfires. The types of loans available are Home Disaster Loans, Business Physical Disaster Loans and Economic Injury Disaster Loans. The deadline for physical damage applications is fast approaching at October 10, 2023. Economic Injury loans available until May 10, 2024. The SBA has representatives at the University of Hawaii Maui College that can help you with applying. You can also apply online.
Hawaii Board of Agriculture Emergency Agricultural Loan
The Hawaii Board of Agriculture has also approved an emergency agricultural loan program for farmers and ranchers suffering damages from the high winds and wildfires in August. The maximum loan amount is $350,000 and the interest rate is 3%. The deadline for application to this loan is February 29, 2024. They also have micro-loans under $50,000 available with less requirements. Impacted agricultural operations interested in applying should contact the Agricultural Loan Program on O‘ahu at (808) 973-9458 or email hdoa.agloan@hawaii.gov. Loan applicants need to provide estimates of losses and should document the damage with photos.
USDA Farm Service Agency
Federal disaster assistance is also available through the USDA FSA. The emergency loan program is triggered when a natural disaster or emergency is declared by the President. The maximum loan amount is $500,000. The requirements vary depending on loan amount. Local Contact for FSA Maui Service Center Office: 77 Hookele St., 2nd Floor, Kahului.
