Every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. there is a large open-aired farmers market just north of Pahoa on Keaau-Pahoa road called the Makuu Farmer’s Market. This farmer’s market is filled with more that just fresh fruits and vegetables. It has everything from local art, to wellness and local services, indigenous plants, it is a bit of a flea market, as well as having numerous food vendors to choose from when you are done shopping. You will discover rows and rows of vendors that sell a variety of items, so plan to spend a few hours here as not to miss anything.
At the Makuu Farmer’s Market you can find one of a kind, locally made art for yourself or for a gift. Beautiful hand blown glass, island photography, paintings depicting island life, shells, clothing, and jewelry are just to name a few. If you needed wellness or homes services, you can find them at the market too. You can get a chiropractic back adjustment, learn about the nutritional benefits of turmeric, and find vendors who can trim your trees, or install energy efficient water tanks.
Did you bring your appetite? Look no further, as the choices abound! There is something for everyone ranging from breakfast fare to Thai, BBQ, Mexican, Hawaiian, Lebanese, plus pastries and coffee at this farmer’s market. It is fun to sample from the multiple food vendors just to get a chance to taste the different cuisine. Once you get your food, listen for the live music and make your way over to the picnic tables. There is live entertainment as you dine under a covered open aired roof, family style. Sit back and enjoy the market and the people watching.
Be sure to arrive early for the best selection of arts, crafts, fruits, veggies, and plants. Also, bring a shopping bag for all your goodies. Makuu Farmer’s Market costs $2 dollars per car for parking. Aloha!
