Do you love where you live? Why? Most of us settle into a home and a neighborhood for specific reasons. For example, you may have chosen your current home due to its close proximity to work, the school district, convenience to shopping, eateries, or because of the neighborhood amenities. Perhaps your decision to live where you live was really just a matter of affordability. You bought where you bought because it was what you could afford at the time. Or, maybe you live where you live because of lifestyle. You want to surf, paddle, dive, swim, walk or run and your neighborhood offers access to the activities you love.
We all settle somewhere and there are a myriad of reasons for the decisions we make when it comes to where we live. Some decisions are more financially based, while others have more to do with the emotional and practical reasons we choose to live where we live. Family, friends, peer groups for your children, weather, commute, and a thousand other factors come into play when it comes to your housing decisions, understandably so.
Do You Truly Love Where You Live?
But, let me ask you again. Do you love (and I mean really love) where you live? I hope you do because loving where you live enhances just about everything about your life. Loving where you live fosters your well-being and contributes to a more fulfilling and positive life experience. When you feel a connection to your surroundings and community, you’re not only happier, but you have a strong sense of belonging and purpose. Studies actually have shown that loving where you live has been linked to a variety of positive health benefits. Both mental and physical.
Your home and its surroundings are your personal habitat. Your place. And, your place matters because it is in your place that you really live. It’s where you share experiences with others, enjoy the unique character of your surroundings, and where you live your one best life.
Your Home Is Your Anchor
Your experience and relationships within a place contribute to your sense of self and your understanding of the world. When you think about it, your home and where you live serve as an intersection of the people you know and the experiences you have. Your place – your home – ties these two quintessential pieces together. Your home anchors you and serves as a foundation for your life. It acts as a physical and emotional anchor and helps to keep you grounded.
So, back to my initial question. Do you love where you live? I hope so because there are so many benefits to loving your place in the world. Your home may be dated, small, or in need of repair. It may be grand and lovely. Sure, aesthetics matter, but what matters more is how you feel when you are home and in your community. When you love where you live, you will be happier, healthier, more engaged, and have a greater sense of purpose and belonging in the world.
I’ll be sharing more about why I love where I live in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, please reach out to me and let me know why you love where you live! I’d love to hear from you.
