List of Home Financial and Business Resources to Support Our Local Maui Community, During Coronavirus

Due to the recent events with Coronavirus and the lockdown period, many businesses have had to postpone or limit services and operations, which has presented many differing challenges. To show our support and care for our local Maui businesses and community, we have prepared a list of resources that can help provide relief.


Direct Cash Payments

Most people will receive a one-time cash payment from the federal government. Individuals receive $1,200 (joint filers receive $2,400) plus $500 per child under 17 years old.

The IRS has also recently launched a Get My Payment application where you can check on the status.

Hawai’i Emergency Laulima Partnership Program

The H.E.L.P. program offers financial assistance for Maui County residents with essential needs such as food, personal hygiene, medicine, rent, mortgage, utility services, phone or internet services, car payments, and other necessities. The program is being administered through a partnership with Maui Economic Opportunity, Inc. (MEO).

United Way Rent & Utility Assistance Program

Aloha United Way has created the COVID-19 Rent & Utility Assistance Program to support individuals and families for any rent or utility arrears accumulated from March 15, 2020.

Hope Emergency Assistance

HOPE Services Hawaii, Inc (HOPE) is providing one-time emergency financial assistance (up to $1,000 per household) to provide stability to Hawai‘i Island ALICE (Asset-Limited Income Constrained) households demonstrating a loss of income as a result of COVID-19. Funds will support rent, mortgage, utility, necessary medical purchases, care payments, or insurance that are unable to be paid because of a loss of income.

Liliʻuokalani Trust Stabilization Assistance

Liliʻuokalani Trust is providing kōkua through one-time emergency stabilization financial assistance for those who qualify. Eligible families must have a Hawaiian kamaliʻi (child ages birth to 17 years old) residing in the household of the requestor, and they must have legal authority to request this assistance.

Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) provides small businesses with zero-fee loans of up to $10 million to cover payroll and other operating expenses. Up to 8 weeks of payroll, mortgage interest, rent, and utility costs can be forgiven. Payments on principal and interest are deferred for one year.

Corporate Tax Relief

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act creates a refundable payroll tax credit for businesses (large and small) and non-profits that retain their employees during the COVID-19 crisis.

Economic Disaster Loan and Emergency Grants

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act temporarily expands eligibility for SBA economic injury disaster loans (EIDL) and provides an emergency advance of up to $10,000 to small businesses and private non-profits harmed by COVID-19.

Self-Employed and Independent Contractors

Self-employed individuals and independent contractors who are unable to work for the weeks impacted as a result of COVID-19 between Jan. 27-December 31, 2020 may apply for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. The State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations is finalizing the eligibility guidelines and application process, and plans to activate a phone hotline to help answer any questions.

Mortgage Payment Forbearance

If the coronavirus pandemic has caused job loss, income reduction, sickness, or other issues, federally held mortgages are eligible for relief. Mortgages backed by FHA, USDA, VA, HUD Sec 184, Fannie Mae, or Freddie Mac are eligible for interest and penalty free forbearance for at least 6 months and up to one year.

Real Estate Transaction Deadline Relief

The IRS issued guidance Thursday evening to grant deadline relief for both 1031 like-kind exchanges and opportunity zone investments that are already underway.

  • 1031 Like-kind exchanges: If an investor has taken the first step of a like-kind exchange by selling the old property, and either the 45-day or the 180-day deadline falls between April 1 and July 15, the deadline has been extended to July 15.

  • Opportunity Zones: If an investor who sold a capital asset planned to roll over the gain into an Opportunity Fund and the 180-day deadline to do so falls between April 1 and July 15, 2020, he or she can make the investment as late as July 15.

Maui Food Bank is providing food distribution to ensure that no one in Hawai‘i goes hungry, particularly during this time of crisis. Maui Food Bank has food distribution locations across the island, and we have included the list in the link below.

Maui Produce and Plant Exchange is an online Facebook group that offers a way for locals to exchange what you have and what you need with others in the local community.

MauiTime has compiled a list of local Maui based restaurants who are currently offering take out, curbside delivery, online orders, or meal deliveries during COVID-19.

50% Savings on Take-Out Food

A new social media campaign from Central Pacific Bank is encouraging Hawaiʻi residents to continue to support local restaurants and eateries amid the growing COVID-19 pandemic. The company is offering to pay for 50% of your total take-out bill for select dining locations throughout the state.

Google, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and UNESCO have created a temporary hub of information and tools to help teachers and people looking to teach from home during the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.

Stay at Home Maui is an online Facebook resource group for Maui residents and small businesses to connect with each other, offer or exchange goods or services and ask questions through the COVID-19 crisis.
