Born in Guam, Mike soon found himself living on Oahu immersed in island sports. Presently, Mike calls Holualoa on the Big Island home where water sports coupled with Hawaii’s beautiful environment continue to inspire his artistic talent. As a long time friend and fan, I took the opportunity to sit down with Mike to find out what inspires him, and to learn more about his art work.

Interview with Big Island Artist Mike Field

CN: Inspiration – Where do you get your ideas? What recharges you?

MF: I get my ideas from experiences. A good trip recharges me. Late afternoons and early mornings also recharge me. Impromptu live music. Spur of the moment adventure. Calculated risks are always fun. It’s Hawaii that keeps me charged and inspired.

CN: Style – Describe your style and media that you work on, what differentiates M. Field?

MF: My style is simple, bold, colorful, masculine and feminine, it’s fine art, and it’s corporate. Easy to digest. Complex on thought. Asymmetrically balanced. Thought provoking. Atmospheric. Curves are important and where they intersect is even more important. Composition intrigues me, where elements stand, what they represent. What they symbolize. Often times they’re deep in thought. Yet simply represented.

The media for my work ranges from bronze to paper, and everything in between. Lately, I’ve been working in oils, although prefer pencil and paper. What differentiates my style in my art and design is trying to lighten the load on people’s minds, and still get the message across. I’m comfortable using color, where others may not be. I try to make the background just as important as the foreground.

Mike continues to diversify his talent by applying art to practical everyday wear, but his ability to create fine art makes him first choice for many interior designers. For more information about Mike’s artwork, you can visit his website, or perhaps you may run into him at Kukio. Either way, his Aloha Spirit and love for Life+Sport+Art is truly inspiring.
