Kuapa Isle – Marinafront & Views in Hawaii Kai

A wonderful Hawaii Kai marinafront community right off Hawaii Kai Drive. Recent posts on the Neighborhood app rave about Kuapa Isle. It’s safe and secure with very friendly neighbors. Having previously lived there for 7 years, I can attest to that. The kids loved going out on the water in a kayak or sunfish and playing with their friends in the parks.

It’s a short boat ride to the ocean. Hawaii Kai shopping centers have boat docks so you can go shopping or to dinner on your boat. The marina Christmas Boat Parade is a great event.

Kuapa Isle Amenities

Kuapa Isle has a community pool, basketball court (doubles as guest parking), clubhouse with kitchenette for gatherings and meetings and 136 visitor parking stalls, more than 1 per two homes. The entry is manned by the “Courtesy Patrol” except when he or she is “making the rounds.” Very well managed, there is an in-house crew that maintains the parks, extensive landscaping, and home exteriors and roofs. The crew actually did all of the roof replacements years ago at great savings and they still look like new. Maintenance fees are low compared to others. Being built in 1970, they are 50 years old but thanks to excellent care and management, they remain in excellent condition.

Kuapa Isle Homes

There are only two homes per building divided by a “soundproof” hollow tile wall, each having an attached two-car carport with storage and a fenced side yard. They have lanais, some enclosed. Dinner on the lanai overlooking the marina is a treat. Many feel it’s like a single family home. There are a total of 234 homes with 5 different floorplans, 2 single story, 3 two story. Most are on the marina but some off. For off-marina owners, there is a boat storage area. The interior living areas range from 1,164 to 1,557 square feet, larger if the lanai is enclosed.

Of course, Kuapa Isle was part of the masterplan of the Hawaii Kai developer, Henry J. Kaiser, back in the ’60s. Kaiser dredged the Kuapa Pond and created the marina by building seawalls with large rocks he cleared from the hillsides and mountainsides where he also built homes, like on Mariner’s Ridge. Kaiser extended the highway out to Hawaii Kai. The City declined to extend sewer service to Hawaii Kai so Kaiser built his own sewage treatment plant and all the infrastructure that goes with it.

Kuapa Isle is two parallel fingers of land sticking out into the marina. The east facing homes have spectacular wide marina, sunrise and Koko Crater views; west facing homes have sunset views and wide water.

Pricing

Marinafront homes sell in the $900,000 to $1.2M range; off-marina, $800,000 to $900,000 range.
