Talk Story #63 – Kewalo Basin: Prime Area in Kaka’ako/Ala Moana Gets Renewed Attention

Day after day, in our warm climate here on Oahu, new construction is the name of the game throughout the island. From Honolulu to Waikiki, one immediately notices the multitude of tall building cranes, slowly swinging with their loads in a continuous motion.

Enthusiastic and immediate sales have been prevalent as high-rise living has become the way to enjoy a carefree lifestyle. Luxury? Yes, but also there is a percent of all new properties designated in the more ‘affordable’ category. It is just a known fact – prime location and its land is precious and expensive. On an island, the only way is to build ‘up.’

Kewalo Basin Harbor

Located off of Ala Moana Blvd., this mixed-use harbor provides berthing for commercial and charter fishing, also recreational vessels. Adjacent is the popular Ala Moana Beach Park and Magic Island, where surfers, locals, and tourists alike come for the running paths, paddle boarding, picnicking, and to let their children catch a fish or two. Parking is available, but for those who prefer, it is only a bike ride or stroll over to the areas.

With oceanfront availability a top premium, attention has turned once again to the less used state parks at the Kaka’ako waterfront, including a smaller interior section called the Gateway park on the other side of the Basin.

Not as developed as the other popular Ala Moana shoreline areas, this location is being once again seriously discussed. Recently, the Hawaii Community Development Authority approved moving toward a new environmental impact statement and master plan to improve this area and its current usage.

New Luxury Condominiums on Oahu

The following 4 new luxury condominiums are currently in the Kaka’ako parade of construction crane activity. Hawaii Life would represent you in the purchase of these developer properties. Previous Talk Story #59 has an example regarding 3 of the newest condos.

Come and see for yourself what is happening, there is a high level of energy and motion on this capitol island of Oahu, ever-changing to accommodate demand from around the world. Enjoy the weather, beauty, and value of this strategically located group of Pacific islands.
