A Kauai South Shore Gem – The Shops at Kukui’ula

The Shops at Kukui’ula on the sunny south shore of Kauai is a favorite shopping destination and home base for locals like me and out-of-state visitors alike. Nestled in the resort playground of Poipu, the center is home to dozens of unique eateries, shops, and boutiques — everything you’d want for an island-style afternoon or evening out.

Dining at the Shops at Kukui’ula

Excellent fine dining is complemented by casual food options. I personally love Merriman’s Fish House and Eating House 1849. Make sure you make an advance restaurant reservation as the best Poipu restaurants are filling up one month in advance. Hawaii-inspired local boutiques and art galleries abound and offer a unique insight into island life and art. The pieces change regularly so they’re always worth a tour. Top off your relaxed outing with a Kauai Pie ice cream (Kona Coffee Ice Cream, Hawaiian Macadamia Nuts, shredded and lightly toasted coconut, and rich dark chocolate fudge) from the famous Lappert’s Kauai. All of these options are surrounded by scenic, plantation-style architecture that manages to feel upscale while remaining authentic to Hawaii’s plantation past and true to the laid-back Aloha spirit.

Farmers Market

I’m a regular at the weekly Farmers Market each Wednesday from 3:30pm to 6:00pm. The countless stalls feature everything from made-to-order specialties to fresh fruit and veg. Don’t miss the live music in the Palm Court every Friday evening for the Kanikapila at Kukuiula from 5:30pm to 7:30pm if you’re looking to party!

Build a Home

The Shops at Kukui’ula are some of the best the island has to offer during your stay. The residential neighborhood of Kukuiula (a few hundred yards away down a semi-hidden private path) offers a similar proposition — the best the island has to offer if you’re looking to build or buy a dream home. Sitting on 1,000 acres of a former sugar plantation, the exclusive Kukuiula is the island’s only private Club community. It’s the home of luxury custom homes, villas, and once-in-a-lifetime ocean view lots to build your island dream home.
