Hanapa’a! An achievement phrase when one’s got a fish on the line. Kailua-Kona, A prized fishing destination!
Hawaii is one of the worlds top deep sea fishing locations! It’s the geography of the Big Island that makes Kona the sport fishing capital of the Pacific ocean. The mountain masses of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Kohala, Hualalai and Kilauea protect the Kona coast from the winds, resulting in perfect sea conditions! With Hualalai’s steep slope into the ocean, deep sea sport fishing is within a short distance from the shoreline. Just three miles straight out of the harbor, it’s more than 6,000 feet deep!
Anglers are always in pursuit of Hawaii’s ultimate catch, the Pacific Blue Marlin, one of the largest and powerful fish in the sea, so far for 2010 the largest catch recorded at the Honokohau Marina is 600.5lbs and 700lbs caught and released. There are also many other fish to catch including Mahi Mahi (dorado), Ono (wahoo), Ahi (yellow fin tuna), Spearfish, Sailfish and Opakapaka. The fishing in Kona is plentiful and can be experienced year round.
I think the best part of fishing is the meal to be enjoyed, maybe a bit of Seared Ahi, some tasty Poke or Fresh Sashimi, Yum!
Speaking of great catches, take a look at…

Just got back from a recent trip fishing in Kona with Captain Jeff Fay or maybe it’s Fey and his crew on the Humdinger (www.humdingersportfishing.com). Amazing time – Jeff and his crew were awesome. If you’re looking for a charter in kona, I highly recommend them!
