Ironman World Championship Returns to Kailua-Kona, on Hawaii Island October 6 and 8

The countdown is on as participants and spectators alike get ready for the return of this world class event here Thursday, October 6 and Saturday, October 8 following a two year pause due to COVID. This is the first time in its 44 year history in Kailua-Kona that the women and men will compete separately – the women on October 6, the men on October 8.

It is the planet’s definitive physical, mental and emotional test of strength, resilience and endurance with a course that covers 140.6 miles beginning with a 2.4 mile ocean swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run that takes racers along arid and hot lava fields. More than 2,000 athletes from all over the globe are expected, ranging in age from 18-85. To qualify for the world championship event, all participants must have placed in 1 or more Ironman or Ironman 70.3 events hosted in about 50 international locations each year.

The action starts in Kailua-Kona Bay at 7am with cut-off times for each of the 3 events – those who don’t meet the set time limits are eliminated with the last of the remaining athletes needing to cross the finish line by midnight – not one minute later!

Whether the 2022 event is your first time – or your 44th time – cheering competitors on, this is one not-to-be-missed experience! You can bet I will be watching from various locations throughout the day – it’s one of my favorite Hawaii Island events among the many offered here year round! There is still time to volunteer – volunteers make this event possible – click on Register to volunteer with IRONMAN via VolunteerLocal soon to sign up!
