Iconic Maui Fine Artist Paints 12×24 Mural at Maui Prep’s New Gym

Iconic West Maui-based fine artist Jim Kingwell of Kingwell Island Art Collection has just completed a beautiful 12 x 24 mural at the entrance of Maui Preparatory Academy’s new gym. Jim is academically-trained and has travelled the world, including a few stints in the Alps, painting plein air. The artist’s presence only compliments the values of Maui Prep, an academy which “seeks to provide students with challenging, thoughtful and creative coursework that meets their particular needs and interest levels as learners and individuals” (mauiprep.org).

Parents of Maui Prep students describe the ‘soft skills’ and student-driven learning as a breath of fresh air and perfect preparation for careers that may not even exist yet. Skillsets of our future generation and workforce develop, as well as essential human-to-human mindfulness and communication that too much emphasis on technology can overlook. At the end of the day, life is still about the people, no matter how technology advanced we become.

The idyllic campus sits above it all in Upper West Maui and offers schooling from Pre-School to High School.

Keep your eyes peeled for Kingwell while walking Kapalua Bay, you’ll often see him painting en plein-air. . .or, once life resumes post COVID-19, head to Kingwell Island Art off Old Town Lahaina’s Front Street on a Lahaina Second Friday Art Night!
