Tips on How to Beat Military Traffic on Oahu

You probably don’t want to hear this, but you can’t beat it. That’s the real truth, ask anybody who lives here. Now with major road work and repaving all over the island, building a first-ever rail system, and a constantly breaking down zipper lane, it’s bad out there.

To Help Pass the Time

You can carry snacks and drinks in your car at all times, never be in a hurry, and play your favorite soothing music, however, you’ll probably still be wondering at one point or another if there is something else you can do. Below are a few ways to help you “beat” military traffic on Oahu – at least make the best of it.

1. Radio games. What you can do is turn on the FM radio for up-to-the-minute updates. While checking the FM stations for updates, you can make up games to play, like I do. So far, the most played song of the year is Ed Sheerans “Thinking Out Loud” followed by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars “Uptown Funk.” The artists played at least once a day since January 1st on Hawaii radio stations are Prince and Madonna, and I know this because I have a lot of listening time, hours in fact, sitting in Oahu traffic.

2. Leave early or work late. Rush hour (7am to 9:30am) coming from Ewa Beach, Central, or Pearl city is tough. Going home at 4 or 5pm is worse. Pearl Harbor gets out officially at 3pm, but to beat it you have to be on the road headed West by 2:15pm. Or if you have the option to work late, 7pm is a great time to get home. From 2:30pm to 6:30pm it’s bumper to bumper on H-1 West from town, the airport, Joint Base, and anywhere near the stadium.
