Kauai's Famous Coco Palms Hotel Still Stirs People's Hearts

For many years, visitors to Kauai were graced by the beautiful coconut groves, the lagoons, and the Hawaiian hospitality that was abundant under the leadership of Grace Guslander and her staff at the famous Coco Palms.

It was a glorious time, not only for the staff, but for every visitor to Kauai and to Coco Palms. Prior to the hurricane, this hotel was graced by many celebrities including our own Larry Rivera, Hollywood greats like Frank Sinatra and many others, and of course—Elvis.

Sadly, the hotel was severely damaged during the 1991 Hurricane Iniki and it has never been rebuilt. Still today, almost 20 years later, visitors still share fond memories of their stays at Coco Palms.

We are still hopeful that some developer will come in and rebuild it to something similar to what it was before—a warm, moderately priced hotel brimming with Hawaiian hospitality.

Until the hotel returns, visitors will continue to look for ways to recreate the Hawaiian experience that Coco Palms offered. One place that this is possible is at The Pineapple House—just across the street from the old Coco Palms Hotel.

This home has been fully remodeled, is a popular vacation rental, and is now being offered for sale. This plantation home has been used by Hollywood film crews during the filming of movies using the Coco Palms location, including the most recent movie, Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Walk to the beach or the Wailua River in under 5 minutes. More information.

Check out our slide show of this amazing home!

Lucy nice blog. I love Coco Palms. I hope one day they restore it to the true beauty it really is and needs to be again. Beautiful music by the way.

Yes, we too have a desire to see this hotel restored to what it was in the grand days of Coco Palms.

Thanks Denise, I think Cape Cod is the next best place after Hawaii.

In 1986 or so my Mother, sister and I made a trip to Kauai. It has fond memories for me. It was the only trip we all made together and my Mother died sometime later. We had dinner at the Cocoa Palms and I was truely in heaven. The food was excellantand the bathroom with the large shells for sinks just blew me away. I also remember my onoin soup came in a large onion. I loved this place because “Blue Hawaii” is a favorite film of mine. Please someone restore my memories for me and rebuild it as it once was.

My adult dream had been to visit Hawaii. Finally after years of researching, dreaming and planning I chose Kauai. I was a nurse at Wilcox Hospital for 6 months. On my days off work I walked all the way from Lihue to CocoPalms Hotel where the sun tanned me and the hotel refreshed me. To this day in 2012 that hotel stands out in my memory as “Hawaii”. Kauai you fulfilled my every dream of what a tropical island would be like. I flew in with the Red Cross when Hurricane Iwa tore through my beloved Kauai.
Someone please restore, or rebuild, CocoPalms to her original alluring ambience.
