Construction Started on New Hokulei Village Shopping Center in Lihue, Kauai

Nuhou Street in Lihue, Kaua’i is closed between Kaneka Street and Kaumualii Highway. I don’t mind the detour because I am excited about having the new Hokulei Village shopping center on the Puhi side of Lihue, much more convenient for Lihue, south shore, and west side Kauai residents.

Approaching the 3-way stops sign, the detour signs send you left on Kaneka Street

New Lihue Businesses

The new shopping center will feature a Safeway Lifestyles store with specialty departments and organic foods featured, along with other businesses including Jack in the Box, Chevron, Walgreens, and Petco. I currently shop at Natural Pets at the Puhi Industrial park, and they are so nice in there! I hope they can survive with a Petco so nearby. I recently heard a store that has been in business for 100 years on Kauai, the Kojiima Store in Kapaa, is closing.

Approaching the new Kia dealer on the right, there are road closure signs

Safeway in Hawaii

I live near here and drive this road often. I don’t mind the inconvenience of the detour. It’s only temporary. I think it’s worth it to have a Safeway store 20 minutes from Kalaheo or Poipu, without having to drive an hour to Kapaa. This will be the second Safeway store on the Garden Island of Kauai. Will you shop at the new store when it opens?

Safeway is the second largest (Kroger is first) supermarket chain in America, and has plans to open additional stores in Hawaii. According to CBRE, Safeway is considering Princeville and Poipu on Kauai for future stores, in addition to other locations on Oahu and neighbor islands, because they believe in the Hawaii market.

I wish you would have brought in another restaurant besides Jack in the Box. We are in dire need of new places to eat. Chile’s, Olive Garden, or one of the steak houses would have been nice. Don’t need a Chevron. Safeway will be great if they keep up with Kapaa store. Petco will takeover the pet area and Walgreens will be interesting here. It will give K-Mart, Walmart and Longs a run for their money. Small island. The really bad part will be the small businesses that will go out of business. Good luck and Aloha!

I heard Walgreens is pulling out. I was excited to see the Petco sign up on the building today with a big sign that said “Groomers” as I have 3 little dogs that need regular grooming.

I agree with Anne. There aren’t enough family restaurants in Lihue. Our family would love an Olive Garden, Denny’s, Chile’s, etc. We have enough local Asian and fast food establishments. Look at how popular Tip Top Cafe is for breakfast and lunch. They’re always packed when we go there. I personally love dining in a booth at those coffeeshop style places with a good variety of dishes at mid-range prices. Whenever we go to Honolulu we dine at Eagle Cafe, Likelike, Denny’s, Chile’s, Big City Diner, and Likelike Drive Inn.
