Historic Manoa Walking Tour on Oahu

Historic Manoa House, English cottage style (MLS# 1101052) currently available for $1,195,000

On the morning of May 1st, I attended this “historic Manoa walking tour.” When I arrived there, every house had curb appeal. Rock wall on the street is still so attractive to me, just like 10 years ago, when I was living on Vanouver Drive. At that time, I always liked to walk with my dog in these streets, and enjoyed those English cottage style houses and gardens.

Ten years later, they are still amazing to me, seeing most of them still preserving the same European-style architectural elements. When you are walking in this neighborhood, you ‘ll feel you are in some European countryside. It’s full of sunshine, and has quiet and peaceful surroundings.

Manoa History House—2006 McKinly Street

The above pictures tell us how the “Malama Manoa” homeowner preserved the historic house. This house was built in 1936. This historic Manoa residence has a lava rock foundation with a prominent outset front entry and an unusual pair of stairs. It is a Craftsman-style home, built on three levels with a finished basement.

The detached garage is constructed with lava rock and redwood, and built into a hillside. The right side picture (above) was taken in 2003. At that time, this house was on the market and it needed to be preserved from the inside to the outside. Look at the left side picture (above), and you’ll see a current preserved house. It tells us that the current homeowner spent a lot of money and energy to preserve the history of “Malama Manoa’s” spirit.

This tour also inspired me. As a homeowner and a real estate professional, I need to look around our own neighborhood and our client’s neighborhood for markers of the past. Each curb appeal, each rock wall, tells you a lot of past and current homeowner’s stories. A lot of neighborhoods in Hawaii need to be preserved and appreciated. I think it will be great if every community had something like this.
