In the years between 2000 and 2010, Hawaii’s population grew 12.3% to 1.36 million. A majority of those people, 953,207, live on Oahu, which saw an increase of 9% over the 10 year period. During the same period, Maui’s population grew 21% to 154,834.

The Big Island had the largest increase, growing 24.5% to 185,079. Hawaii is the most ethnically diverse state with almost one in four residents claiming they are of two or more races.

Some perspective on the Big Island’s population now at 185,079:

  • The land mass of the Big Island is roughly the same as the state of Connecticut, and that state has a population of about 3.5 million.

So, if you’re looking for low population density and wide open spaces for a second home or retirement, the Big Island is hard to beat.
