Hana Estate For Sale – An East Maui Paradise

When you hear the word “paradise,” what comes to mind? Perhaps you envision untouched natural beauty. Sublime landscapes as far as the eye can see. An oasis of tranquility far from the bustle of everyday life.

130 Kalo Rd has all of that and more.

Over 10 Acres of Lush Foliage

In addition to the main house and private guest cottage, the 10+-acre residence is home to Kolea Farm, so named for the Pacific golden plover, or kolea, a migratory bird that makes a 3,000-mile long journey from Alaska to Hawai‘i every year.

Abundant Plant Variety

The Eden-like property has more than fifty species of fruit-, nut-, and spice-bearing trees. Among them: banana (of which there are several varieties), cashew, grapefruit, tangelo, Meyer lemon, blood orange, mango, cherry, apple, avocado, starfruit, ulu (breadfruit), coffee, and cacao (of which there are approximately 150). Spice trees include cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and Malabar chestnut. There are also a number of timber and flowering trees, including plumeria, orchid, ylang ylang (also known as the Chanel No. 5 Perfume tree), red silk cotton, mahogany, kukui (candlenut trees), Norfolk pine, and pheasantwood, among others.

And there are palm trees galore, including royal, acai, foxtail, triangle, lipstick, dwarf, fish tail, coconut, and approximately 1,800 pejibaye, also known as peach palms, which provide hearts-of-palm. There are also several varieties of ti, croton, fern, bamboo, heliconia, ginger, and flowering shrubs.

Optimal Growing Conditions

Here, plants and trees thrive. With its volcanic soil, benign climate, and dependable rainfall, Hāna offers optimal growing conditions. The vast number of plants and trees may seem daunting to the not-so-green-thumbed, but maintenance is surprisingly easy: It only requires a modest amount of mowing, weeding, pruning, and occasional liquid fertilizing.

Nature on Display

This horticultural haven attracts its share of winged visitors throughout the year, including owls, butterflies, and honeybees. Everywhere you look, the majesty of nature is on full display, says architect Robin Raynor, who lovingly remodeled the home. “The gentle breeze that always feels like a soft caress, the undulating lands that provide a diverse walk among fruiting trees where there is usually something yummy… it’s a joyful experience.”
