Build Your Dream Home in Hawaii

More times than not, my clients are usually in the market for a “ready-to-move-in” home. While I understand the need for immediate occupancy, I think that the benefits of designing and building your own home are often times overlooked.

Here are the top 3 reasons I believe building is a good idea:

  1. Home is tailored to fit the needs of the owner(s).
  2. EVERYTHING is brand-new.
  3. Home is designed specific to owner’s taste and style.

Building on Kauai

So how difficult then is it to build here on our remote island of Kauai? Not as difficult as you would think. Much of the process is the same as is practiced on the mainland, with most of the hurdles being associated with getting the multiple permits required from multiple agencies. Your first step after your land purchase would be to hire an architect. Once you and the architect have developed a set of stamped plans, you will start soliciting contractors. Because new builds are so clearly defined, contractors are able to provide you with a fixed bid. (I always think it’s wise to have at least 3 people bid the project.) It will be the responsibility of the contractor to apply for all the necessary building permits with the county. Once permits are issued, breaking ground begins!

Part of making the building process run smoothly is having the right team of people in place. If you need any referrals or help being pointed in the right direction, always happy to offer advice. Of course, I’m also here for assistance for the initial step of the process — buying the land! Check out our current vacant land listings below. Feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions about the building process or interest in learning and/or looking at vacant land!
