Biophilic Design for Your Home

Are you familiar with Biophilic design? What exactly is it and how can you incorporate it into your home? Biophilic design is making a comeback, though it’s really been part of Hawaii homes for years. After all, living in Hawaii is all about our connection to nature and Biophilic design is simply connecting to nature through architecture. A house infused with Biophilic design makes you feel like you are stepping into the natural world. It’s about creating a soothing and inspiring space that supports your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Use Natural Materials

Do you want your home to connect more with the surrounding environment? Start by using natural materials.  Consider natural stone over engineered quartz and hardwood floors over luxury vinyl. Whenever possible, use natural lighting. There’s nothing better than the light of our Hawaiian sun. Create seamless connections between the interior of your home to the outdoors. You can do this by carrying similar finishes throughout the interior and exterior of your home. The same floor level can also help to create a seamless flow from the inside to the outside.

Add Plants

Get creative with plants. Indoor plants are great, but what about a wall of living plants? A living  green wall can actually improve the condition of the air and reduce noise. Or, perhaps you can consider a water feature in your home? The sound of water is both relaxing and restorative. And, the mere presence of water enhances the overall experience of a place.

Feel Good in Your Home

The goal in Biophilic design is for your space to feel like nature. How do you feel when you go on a hike? To the beach? Do the sounds of nature relax you? Biophilic home design will  boost your mood. And, research shows that it can impact your productivity and your well-being.

Our surroundings have a major impact on our lives. If we learned anything through the pandemic, we learned the importance of space, so if you want to feel happier and healthier, get creative and enhance your home by incorporating biophilic design ideas. Or, if you’re lucky enough to live in Hawaii, you can just go to the beach!
