Are Beaches on Oahu Open During COVID-19? Beach Rules & Tips for Quarantine

The City and County of Honolulu is helping us maintain essential services during this time.

Some services have been paused or have altered hours, so before you head out, you can check to see which beaches are open! Disclaimer: I am just a beach lover and real estate agent providing useful information for people who also want to exercise and go to the beach. Some information in this blog maybe changed or updated during this quarantine process.

According to the Oahu Department of Parks and Recreation:

All city parks, park events, park facilities (except stand-alone comfort stations and Community Gardens), campgrounds, and the Honolulu Botanical Gardens are closed.

According to the city and county’s site, all park events, classes, and programs organized by the department or permitted to other organizations are canceled until further notice. This includes the 93rd Lei Day Celebration and the 71st Mayor’s Memorial Day Ceremony as well.

The following facilities are closed as well:

• Gyms
• meeting rooms
• recreational buildings
• Pools
• Fields
• Play courts (basketball, volleyball, tennis, pickleball, etc.),
• Skateparks
• Playgrounds
• Exercise equipment
• Etc.

City and County of Honolulu said the following. Remember, “you can go through a park, but you cannot remain in it.”

When I was at the beach last week, there were people getting warned by police officers who were riding in the ATVs and they warned me as well as I was walking along the beach. They mentioned there is a new rule stating that visitors are able to head into the water (for swimming exercise), and out to head home, but we are not allowed to stand, sit, talk, or walk along the beach or we would get a $5000 fine for sitting on the beach and not practicing social distancing properly.

Those who remain in closed City parks are subject to citation or arrest from the Honolulu Police Department. Police will issue citations for loitering, having open containers of alcohol, and can also land you a citation. You can find more information here through the City and County of Honolulu’s website. They have been very helpful as they also have a call center in which you can call and ask if you are unable to get your question answered via the website.
