Luxurious Hawaiian Homes of our Island’s Royalty

This video shows archival photographs from the Bishop Museum depicting Hawaiian homes of our island’s Ali’i (royalty). Modest by today’s standards, these were the luxury homes of Hawaii in the not to distant past.

Simple, yet undeniably elegant. Perhaps the next wave of design trends will lead us to more modest settings.

I think I sold the one on the water in the last frame a few years ago… 😉 (But seriously, it does look like the mauna lani talk story shack).

Very cool! One thing that comes to mind when I see these historical buildings is how little vegetation there was at the time. When you visit these sites now, they have tons of full-grown tropical trees, vegetation, etc. These pics can be an example of how a more sparce region, (like lava fields), can fill in and be lush with vegetation! With a little water, TLC and the abundant sunshine of Hawaii, you don’t have to wait for history to pass before realizing tropical beauty!
