12 Words You Need to Know Before Coming To Hawaii

Here is a quick guide of 12 words you should know before coming to Hawaii whether visiting or moving here:

Dakine – It’s like whatchamacallit. People refer to dakine when they are talking about a person or thing they can’t think of the name of.

Aloha – This one is easy; it means welcome and goodbye.

Mahalo – Thank you.

Ohana – Family or it can also refer to when a house has an apartment or cottage that is rented out.

Kane – Man. If you are looking for the restroom, this is a good one to know!

Wahine – Woman.

Aina – The land. And please understand that the Aina is very important in Hawaii.

Akamai – To be “with it,” to be proper, or right.

Holo holo – To wander aimlessly, to go on a journey.

Kama’aina – Somebody who is part of the community for a long time.

No Ka Oi – “Is the best”…You will often hear the phrase Maui No Ka Oi!

A Hui Hou – Goodbye.
