If you are a senior like me, you understand the importance of aging well. You probably agree that living-well matters more than just living long. It’s all about quality of life.
How Mindset Affects Aging
So, how can seniors make better choices in the short term to improve the long-term quality of life? Personally, I believe a lot has to do with attitude. Our mindset impacts how well we age. In fact, researchers have found that people with negative attitudes about aging die seven and a half years earlier on average than those who have positive aging attitudes. Even our ability to recover from disease and injury is impacted by our attitudes.
Positive Attitude
If you want to age in a positive way, it’s really important to watch your attitude. Is your opinion about aging negative? Or, do you embrace this season of life and all of the benefits that come with being a mature adult?
Affirmative attitudes about aging can actually help you age well! In fact, a positive outlook and attitude may even help to reduce your risk of developing dementia. According to studies, attitude can beat biology! We all know active, positive seniors that just seem exceptionally vital for their years. Why? Because they have a positive mental outlook on aging and on life.
Physical Exercise & Social Interaction
In addition to having a positive attitude, there are other things that play into positive aging. Physical exercise and social interactions go a long way to keeping us young and vital. So does a sense of independence and freedom of choice. Making your own choices improves the aging experience! So does surrounding yourself with positive people who speak life to your soul. Don’t isolate. Engage!
If you want to age positively, be positive. Do things that keep you healthy in all areas. Embrace your age and this season in your life! Your positive attitude about aging will make a difference. A big difference!
