Tastes of Hawaii Recipe – King’s Bakery Bread Pudding From Kauai’s Old Plantation Days

Week 2—King’s Bakery Bread Pudding!

King’s Bakery Bread Pudding Recipe

(Originally named after the original Hawaiian Sweet Bread Bakery)

  • 1# loaf King’s Bakery sweet bread (You can use any kind of Hawaiian sweet bread available)
  • 9 eggs beaten
  • 1 ½ blocks butter or margarine
  • 1 ½ tsp. vanilla
  • cinnamon (to your taste)
  • nutmeg (to your taste)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 cups milk
  • raisins (to your taste)
  • macadamia nuts (optional)

Directions

Melt butter, sugar, and milk. Break the sweet bread into large pieces in greased 9 x 13 pan. Sprinkle raisins (and nuts if used) over bread pieces. Let the melted butter mixture cool until warm. Add the eggs (make sure mixture is not too hot, or else it will curdle). Add vanilla and pour over bread (use a small cup to pour evenly over bread). Sprinkle top with cinnamon and nutmeg. Let it stand for ten minutes to allow top bread to absorb milk mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Knife inserted will come out clean when done.

Wow, I can almost taste that! Sounds so good. I love King’s bread all by itself, but this must be amazingly delish! I’ll see what’s cookin’ next week. 🙂

Not lo-cal however dessert shouldn’t be! Pour a little chocolate caramel sauce over it and it’s tip top.

Is 1 1/2 blocks butter meaning sticks of butter? Thanks.

This is EXACTLY THE WAY MY MOM MADE IT. She’s been gone for almost 18 years and I’ve never been able to find a recipe even close to hers.
Mahalo for all the beautiful memories this delicious dish just brought back… And a few tears as well.
