Surfing Hawai’i: Don’t Miss the Exhibition Going on Now at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center
Check out “Surfing Hawai’i” – an exhibition going on now through February 16th at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
Surfers and artists from Hawaii have contributed to the show about our favorite sport.
Ole’s shaping room is completely replicated in the show minus the styrofoam dust!
Installation of Ole’s shaping room at the MAC.
Pipeline lifeguard and legendary bodysurfer Mark Cunningham uses objects he found over the years in the surf like crusty fins and surf leashes to create art pieces.

My favorite part of the show, though, is the display dedicated to my father, John Severson. Highlights of his display are the first Surfer Magazines he created, a guitar he designed for Fender, his original art, and a surfboard Greg Noll shaped for him.
Pops John Severson’s display includes the first Surfer Mag, his Save Honolua lettering and his original oil painting “Surf Be-Bop”
The exhibition documents the beginning of surfing in Hawaii with history of the he’e nalu and the evolution of surf culture in the Islands. Various collectible boards are on display such as a Tom Blake prototype paddle board plus lots of cool art on surfboards by Gerry Lopez and Charlie Lyon among others.
Pete Cabrinha’s art is on a surfboard next to some of his dynamic large-format collages that mix his images and design elements with carving…
This is me with Pro Surfer / Artist Pete Cabrinha at the show – the Surfer lettering on my shirt is by my dad – for the first Surfer magazine.
Many of the pieces are available to purchase. Don’t miss it — I promise you’ll enjoy the show or your money back… oh, never mind, it’s free of charge!
Love this funky large format piece by Mark Cunningham!

> Mike, I hope you have a chance to see the show – going on until Feb 16th – you’ll trip on the vintage board collection. Original Tom Blake board so valuable, the donor wanted to remain anonymous …guess who?!
